Self-help Group for Cerebral Palsy (SGCP)

Cerebral Palsy{CP) is a general term used for a brain impairment that is non-progressive but which changes in its effects due to maturation and development. It is usually the result of some hazard adversely affecting the brain some time after conception, around birth or during childhood. Persons in cp conditions mostly suffer from disabilities characterised by posture and movement defects. This condition is more often compounded by associated handicaps such as full or partial loss of hearing, speech and/or eyesight. It becomes complex when cp cases are mentally retarded and suffer from epilepsy. Without early intervention cp cases suffer a great deal throughout their lives. Their plight is further enhanced by complete lack of institutional efforts towards their treatment and rehabilitation.

As no base-line study has been carried out on the incidence and pre valence of cp, nobody knows how many people in Nepal suffer from this condition. But we strongly feel that the number of cp cases could be quite large due to inadequate ante-natal and obstetric care as well as poor pre-natal and post-natal care and malnutrition.

As there is few programme for the treatment and rehabilitation of children and adults affect as with cp either in the governmental sector or in the non-governmental sector, the cerebral cases and their parents are completely left out. Within the disability population cp cases are the hardest hit group scattered all over the country, as many of them are born disabled due to different causes and live a life with multiple disabilities. Due to lack supporting services for them in Nepal. the difficulties of cp cases get multiplied and many of them die much earlier. This is the very dismal hard reality on which a good majority Nepalese population is not at all aware of.

To express a human concern and to advocate the right of children and adults in cp conditions and to help their parents with a quality bias on a long term basis, a Group was formed in the year 1987 with the name " Self-help Group for  Cerebral Palsy/Nepal" to begin with. It is a non-government and non-profit organisation fully committed to helping children and adults suffering from cerebral palsy and to providing emotional and practical support to their parents. The group is a team of medical professionals, university teachers, parents of disabled children, social workers, and other individuals interested in social service.

In 1987, the group started its activities with 6 cp cases; in 1999 it has already helped more than 1'35O cases.
