SILICON GRAPHICS

Two different forms of training going on at Silicon Graphics lead to interesting conclusions in relation to the use of time.

The first concerns the training of clients using Silicon Graphics workstations. Clients fit into two broad categories: the engineers and the non-technical users. Training for the latter - who tend to be reticent about computer-based training - takes place in a traditional classroom context with the help of computers. For the former, training takes place on the workstation at their working place using a system called "System Tours". The client - as an engineer - already has a certain knowledge of computers and their use. "System Tours" provides the necessary minimum information needed to be able to use the workstation. This is done either via a general introduction or by the use of a menu or a search function for particular aspects. If further advice is required, Silicon Graphics operate a telephone Hot Line.

The second concerns keeping in-house engineers up-to-date with details of the latest product developments. This is done by the use of a number of internal Web pages maintained by the respective divisions. Should the engineer require additional information a mail function on the Web Home Pages can be used to request advice or help.
