1.1 Introduction

A lot of schools and university institution — for instance TECFA — have small specific libraries. A MOO could be a good place to:

  • trace where books are,
  • remind users of there duties
  • cooperate in sharing books,
  • gather qualified information about books (information and news value, readability),
  • share knowledge about books (which books to consider for specific task, favourite books, new books).

With books I mean also other medias with same usage, audio-tapes, videos, CDs.

The scenery would be a library with information desks and conference rooms.

Hp’s Feasability study for Library Project : To do - 2 -

1.2 To do list

Set up library model, information desk, conference room.

Program the following verbs if not yet incorporated in the MOO:

  • Book with properties as full title, author, abstract, readability rating, information value rating, readers opinion about the book. The Reference (i. e. Wengers 1987a) and the ISBN-Number are set as name and alias, object number is used as library reference to the book.
  • Books of the kind of containers of articles.
  • Checkout (Check out of a book or several books at once form the library)
  • Checkin (Check in of one or several books)
  • Request (request a book to use it for a definite period)
  • Promise (promise to give a book to someone)
  • Give (hand over a book to some one else)
  • Confirmation of receipt of a given book.
  • Inventarisation of the books in the library.

1.3 Not to do

No search tools (keywords, systematics, etc. ) are used. Searching titles is based on user interaction. Plus there are already enough search tools for books and media.

1.4 Other issues

1.4.1 Co-ordinator: Hanspeter Heeb

1.4.2 Problems

Learning the MOO programming and setting up of objects.

Main problem is the command line based approach of the MOO. Therefore books or book-containers should interact with users the way: "Hello, HP, Daniel says he gave you the MOO-EnCore manual can you confirm the receipt (Type yes or no)."

1.4.3 Time needed

Getting started 8 h. Maximum 24 h

Any object and verb 4 h, total 40 h. Total of project 48 h.

Maximum 8 h, Total 120 h. Total of project 144 h (which would be critical).
