Experience value of monsters ============================== by Roger Christman (dvl@psuvm.psu.edu). Monster XP isn't in any of the other spoilers, probably because it cannot be found in the source files directly. Instead, it's a function that is called when a monster dies. Similarly, "monster difficulty", which determines when a monster may appear and how valuable it is for sacrifices is also not easily available. This depends on whether or not your system admininistrator deleted the monst.c file. A few days ago I actually created a list of this data. All the XP values are there. Lev = hit dice of monster. This influences how likely it is to hit you, and figures directly into the XP calculation. If a monster comes "early" (if its standard level is a bit higher than the dungeon level), it may lose a hit die. If it comes "late", it may gain a hit die. XP is adjusted accordingly. Diff= relative difficulty of the monster. This is used to evaluate the the corpse when it is sacrificed and also to determine whether a monster will be summoned, aside from special cases: water demons, mushrooms calling purple worms, etc. The maximum difficulty of new monster is the average of dungeon level and player level -- this is easily observed in play. XP = Earned XP for killing a monster with this many hit dice. Again, having more or fewer hit dice will modify this value. In particular, growing brown molds before slaying gets you XP. Conversely, Stormbringer and polymorphing into Vampire Lords will tend to Reduce the XP you get from a monster. An ad hoc formula that seems to work: XP >= Lev * (Lev + 6) + 1 (more for special features, etc.) Example: Lev 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 XP 1 8 13 28 41 56 73 92 113 This was worked out experimentally. Higher level monsters, however nearly always have good AC, or deliver heavy damage, or have a special attack, or something, so other factors get added in. Amon and killed Juiblex, so I haven't verified all these numbers. However, it does seem consistent in those cases which I have experience.
