Enlightenment (Cur) Abuses your wisdom. Message: "You have an uneasy feeling..." (Reg) This shows you your intrinsics and exercises your wisdom. Message: "You feel self-knowledgeable..." (Bls) This shows you your intrinsics, adds a point each to intelligence and wisdom and exercises your wisdom. Message: "You feel self-knowledgeable..." Extra healing (Cur) Adds 0-15 hit points to your current hit points. If this would put your hit points above your maximum hit points, your maximum hit points are raised by one and your hit points are put at max. This potion also cures blindness and exercises your strength and constitution. Message: "You feel much better." (Reg) Adds 5-20 hit points to your current hit points. If this would put your hit points above your maximum hit points, your maximum hit points are raised by two and your hit points are put at max. This potion will also cure sickness and blindness and exercise your strength and constitution. Message: "You feel much better." (Bls) Adds 10-25 hit points to your current hit points. If this would put your hit points above your maximum hit points, your maximum hit points are raised by five and your hit points are put at max. This potion will also cure sickness and blindness and exercise your strength and constitution. Message: "You feel much better." Fruit juice (Cur) Has a food value of 10. Message: "Yecch! This tastes rotten." Hallucinating: "Yecch! This tastes overripe." (Reg) Has a food value of 20. Message: "This tastes like [fruit] juice." Hallucinating: "This tastes like 10% real [fruit] juice all-natural beverage." (Bls) Has a food value of 30. Message: "This tastes like [fruit] juice." Hallucinating: "This tastes like 10% real [fruit] juice all-natural beverage." Gain ability (Cur) No effect. Message: "Ulch! That potion tasted foul!" (Reg) Increases a random stat by one. (Note that if the random stat the game picks is already maxed out, the game will pick another random stat up to five more times before giving up.) Charisma: "You feel charismatic." Constitution: "You feel tough." Dexterity: "You feel agile." Intelligence: "You feel smart." Strength: "You feel strong." Wisdom: "You feel wise." If a stat is not increased: Message: "Your [stat] is already as high as it can get." (Bls) Increases all of your stats by one. Charisma: "You feel charismatic." Constitution: "You feel tough." Dexterity: "You feel agile." Intelligence: "You feel smart." Strength: "You feel strong." Wisdom: "You feel wise." If a stat is not increased: Message: "Your [stat] is already as high as it can get." Gain energy (Cur) Randomly, you will lose one energy point, remain the same, or gain 1-3 energy points, and the same will happen to your energy point maximum. If this would bring you below zero in either, the figure will be at zero. Your wisdom will also be exercised. Message: "You feel lackluster." (Reg) You gain 2-6 energy points and the same number of points to your maximum energy points. Your wisdom will also be exercised. Message: "Magical energies course through your body." (Bls) You gain 7-11 energy points and the same number of points to your maximum energy points. Your wisdom will also be exercised. Message: "Magical energies course through your body." Gain level (Cur) If you are on a level with a staircase to a higher level you will rise through the ceiling to the next level. In order to rise through the ceiling of level one into the endgame you must have the Amulet of Yendor. Message: "You rise up, through the ceiling!" If you are on level one without the Amulet of Yendor nothing will happen. Message: "You have an uneasy feeling." If there is no staircase to a higher level, nothing will happen. Message: "It tasted bad." (Reg) Gives you enough experience points to exactly get to the next experience level, up to a maximum level of thirty. Message: "You feel more experienced." (Bls) Gives you enough experience points to get to the next experience level and about half-way to the level above that, up to a maximum level of thirty. If you are already at experience level thirty, you will simply gain more experience points. Message: "You feel more experienced." Hallucination (Cur) Causes you to hallucinate for 900-1099 turns. Message: "Oh wow! Everything seems so cosmic!" (Reg) Causes you to hallucinate for 600-799 turns. Message: "Oh wow! Everything seems so cosmic!" (Bls) Causes you to hallucinate for 300-499 turns. Message: "Oh wow! Everything seems so cosmic!" Healing (Cur) Adds 0-5 hit points to your current hit points. If this would put your hit points above your maximum hit points, your maximum hit points are raised by one and your hit points are put at max. This potion also exercises your strength. Message: "You begin to feel better." (Reg) Adds 5-10 hit points to your current hit points. If this would put your hit points above your maximum hit points, your maximum hit points are raised by one and your hit points are put at max. This potion will also cure blindness and exercise your strength. Message: "You begin to feel better." (Bls) Adds 10-15 hit points to your current hit points. If this would put your hit points above your maximum hit points, your maximum hit points are raised by one and your hit points are put at max. This potion will also cure sickness and blindness and exercise your strength. Message: "You begin to feel better." Invisibility (Cur) Makes monsters take notice of you (i.e. aggravate monster). Message: "For some reason, you feel your presence is known." (Reg) Makes you invisible for 31-45 turns. No message if you can see invisible or are currently invisible. Message: "Gee! All of a sudden, you can't see yourself" Blind: "You feel rather airy." Hallucinating: "Far out, man! You can see right through yourself!" (Bls) Allows you to select whether you wish to be permanently invisible or not. If you elect to not remain permanently invisible, you will be invisible for 31-45 turns. No message if you can see invisible or are currently invisible. Message: "Gee! All of a sudden, you can't see yourself" Blind: "You feel rather airy." Hallucinating: "Far out, man! You can see right through yourself!" Levitation (Cur) You will levitate for 1-150 turns. If you are standing on an up staircase or an up ladder, you will float up to the next level. Message: "You start to float in the air!" Hallucinating: "Up, up, and awaaaay! You're walking on air!" Otherwise, you hit your head on the ceiling, taking 1 point of damage if you are wearing a helmet, or 1-10 points of damage if not wearing a helmet. Message: "You hit your head on the ceiling." (Reg) You will levitate for 1-150 turns. Message: "You start to float in the air!" Hallucinating: "Up, up, and awaaaay! You're walking on air!" If you are in a pit, you will be freed from the pit. Message: "You float up, out of the pit!" (Bls) The game will ask you how many turns you wish to levitate for (1- 300) and will levitate your for that many turns. Message: "You start to float in the air!" Hallucinating: "Up, up, and awaaaay! You're walking on air!" If you are in a pit, you will be freed from the pit. Message: "You float up, out of the pit!" Monster detection (Cur) If there are no monsters on the level, there is no effect. Message: "You feel threatened." Hallucinating: "You get the heebie jeebies." Otherwise, you will be shown the location of all monsters on the level and your wisdom will be exercised. Message: "You sense the presence of monsters." Additionally, all sleeping monsters on the level will be woken up. Message: "Monsters sense the presence of you." (Reg) If there are no monsters on the level, there is no effect. Message: "You feel threatened." Hallucinating: "You get the heebie jeebies." Otherwise, you will be shown the location of all monsters on the level and your wisdom will be exercised. Message: "You sense the presence of monsters." Object detection (Reg) If there are no objects on the level, no effect. Message: "You sense the absence of objects." Hallucinating: "You sense the absence of something." Otherwise, you are shown the objects on the level and your wisdom is exercised. Message: "You sense the presence of objects." Hallucinating: "You sense the presence of something." Paralysis (Cur) You are paralyzed for 37-46 turns and abuse your dexterity. Message: "Your feet are frozen to the floor!" Levitating: "You are motionlessly suspended." (Reg) You are paralyzed for 25-34 turns and abuse your dexterity. Message: "Your feet are frozen to the floor!" Levitating: "You are motionlessly suspended." (Bls) You are paralyzed for 13-22 turns and abuse your dexterity. Message: "Your feet are frozen to the floor!" Levitating: "You are motionlessly suspended." Restore ability (Cur) No effect. Message: "Ulch! This makes you feel mediocre!" (Reg) Restores one stat to normal Message: "Wow! This stuff makes you feel good!" (Bls) Restores all stats to normal Message: "Wow! This stuff makes you feel great!" See invisible (Cur) Allows you to see invisible for 750-849 turns. Message: "Yecch! This tastes rotten." Hallucinating: "Yecch! This tastes overripe." (Reg) Cures blindness and allows you to see invisible for 750-849 turns. Message: "This tastes like [fruit] juice." Hallucinating: "This tastes like 10% real [fruit] juice all-natural beverage." (Bls) Cures blindness and gives you the see invisible intrinsic. Message: "This tastes like [fruit] juice." Hallucinating: "This tastes like 10% real [fruit] juice all-natural beverage." Sickness (Cur) If you are a healer, no effect. Message: "Yecch! This stuff tastes like poison. -more- Fortunately, you have been immunized." If you are poison resistant, one stat will be reduced by one point and your constitution will be abused. Message: "Yecch! This stuff tastes like poison. -more- But in fact it was biologically contaminated [fruit] juice." Otherwise, one stat will be reduced by 4-6 points, you will take 6- 15 hit points of damage, and you will abuse your constitution. Message: "Yecch! This stuff tastes like poison." If you are currently hallucinating, you will stop hallucinating. Message: "You are shocked back to your senses!" (Reg) If you are a healer, no effect. Message: "Yecch! This stuff tastes like poison. -more- Fortunately, you have been immunized." If you are poison resistant, one stat will be reduced by one point and your constitution will be abused. Message: "Yecch! This stuff tastes like poison. -more- But in fact it was bioloically contaminated [fruit] juice." Otherwise, one stat will be reduced by 4-6 points, you will take 1- 10 hit points of damage, and you will abuse your constitution. Message: "Yecch! This stuff tastes like poison." If you are currently hallucinating, you will stop hallucinating. Message: "You are shocked back to your senses!" (Bls) If you are a healer, no effect. Otherwise, you will take 1 hit point of damage. Message: "Yecch! This stuff tastes like poison. -more- But in fact it was mildly stale [fruit] juice." If you are currently hallucinating, you will stop hallucinating. Message: "You are shocked back to your senses!" Speed (Cur) You will speed up for 40-49 turns and exercise your dexterity. Message: "You are suddenly moving much faster." If already sped up: "Your legs gain new energy." (Reg) If your legs are wounded, they will be healed, you will speed up for 100-109 turns, and your dexterity is exercised. Message: "You are suddenly moving much faster." If already sped up: "Your legs gain new energy." (Bls) If your legs are wounded, they will be healed, you will speed up for 160-169 turns, and your dexterity is exercised. Message: "You are suddenly moving much faster." If already sped up: "Your legs gain new energy." Water (Cur) Cursed potions of water are unholy water. If you are undead, a demon, or of chaotic alignment, you will be healed 2-12 hit points and exercise your constitution. Message: "You feel quite proud of yourself." If you are lawful, you will take 2-12 hit points of damage and abuse your constitution. Message: "This burns like acid!" Otherwise, you will merely abuse your constitution. Message: "You feel full of dread." Items #dipped in a potion of unholy water will be cursed if currently normal or become normal currently if blessed. (Reg) Regular potions of water can be water or impure water. Water reduces your hunger by 1-10 points. Message: "This tastes like water." Impure water reduces your hunger by 1-3 points. Message: "This tastes like impure water." Scrolls #dipped in a potion of water will be erased and become blank scrolls. (Bls) Blessed potions of water are holy water. If you are undead, a demon, or of chaotic alignment, you will take 2-12 hit points of damage and abuse your constitution. Message: "This burns like acid!" If you are lycanthropic, your lycanthropy will be cured. If you do not have polymorph control, you will also be returned to human form. Message if chaotic: "Your affinity to [rats/jackals/wolves] disappears!" Message if non-chaotic: "You feel purified" If you are not undead, a demon, or of chaotic alignment, any sickness that you may have will be cured, and you will exercise your wisdom and constitution. Message: "You feel full of awe." Items #dipped in a potion of holy water will be blessed if currently normal or become normal if currently cursed. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Potion Throwing Effects: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- In addition to quaffing potions, they can also be potent weapons when thrown at a monster in such a way as to shatter them. This section describes the effects that the various potions will have when smashed over the head (or other body part) of menacing creatures. Note that while monsters can now throw potions at you, you will suffer vapor effect of the potion (see Potion Vapor Effects). These effects are for monsters only, and are described as follows: Potion name (Cur) This will describe the effects that will occur when a monster is hit by a cursed variety of this potion. If this section is missing, the effects are the same as for the regular potion. Message: "This is the message the game will give you." Hallucinating: "You may also see different messages under certain conditions." (Reg) This describes the effect that the standard potion will have (i.e. non-cursed and non-blessed). Message: "This is the message the game will give you." Hallucinating: "You may also see different messages under certain conditions." (Bls) This will describe the effects that will occur when a monster is hit by a blessed variety of this potion. If this section is missing, the effects are the same as for the regular potion. Message: "This is the message the game will give you." Hallucinating: "You may also see different messages under certain conditions." Notes: If you hit a monster with a potion, there is a 20% chance that you will do 1 point of damage to the monster, if it currently has more than one hit point. Also, monsters have a percentage chance of resisting ill effects that is equal to their level plus their magic resistance plus five. In other words, a sixth level monster with a 10% magic resistance would have a 21% chance of resisting ill effects from being hit by a potion. Blindness (Reg) The monster will be blinded for 64-96 turns regardless of whether it resists or not, and 0-32 turns more if it does not resist. Message: None Booze (Reg) If the monster does not resist, it becomes confused. Message: None Confusion (Reg) If the monster does not resist, it becomes confused. Message: None Extra healing (Reg) The monster hit is healed up to maximum hit points. Message: "The [monster name] looks sound and hale again." Blind: No message Gain ability (Reg) The monster hit is healed up to maximum hit points. Message: "The [monster name] looks sound and hale again." Blind: No message Healing (Reg) The monster hit is healed up to maximum hit points. Message: "The [monster name] looks sound and hale again." Blind: No message Invisibility (Reg) The monster hit becomes invisible. Message: None Paralysis (Reg) The monster hit becomes paralyzed for 1-25 turns (no chance of resisting). Message: None Restore ability (Reg) The monster hit is healed up to maximum hit points. Message: "The [monster name] looks sound and hale again." Blind: No message Sickness (Reg) If the monster does not resist, the following effects occur: If the monster's hit point max is greater than three, its hit point max is halved. If the monster's hit points are greater than two, its hit points are halved. (Hit points cannot be more than hit point max.) Message: "The [monster name] looks rather ill." Blind: No message Speed (Reg) Slow monsters hit become normal, while normal monsters become fast Water (Cur) Cursed potions of water are unholy water. If the monster hit is undead of a demon, it will be healed 2-12 hit points. Message: "The [monster name] looks healthier." If the monster hit is a gremlin, it will multiply. Message: "The gremlin multiplies." (Reg) Regular potions of water can be water or impure water. If the monster hit is a gremlin, it will multiply. Message: "The gremlin multiplies." (Bls) Blessed potions of water are holy water. If the monster hit is undead or a demon, it will take 2-12 points of damage. Message: "The [monster name] shrieks in pain!" If the monster hit is a gremlin, it will multiply. Message: "The gremlin multiplies." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Potion Vapor Effects: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- When a potion is broken near you (if you kick and break one, for instance, or if a monster throws one at you), the vapor or splash from certain types of potions can affect you. The vapor effects of the various potions are described as follows: Potion name (Cur) This will describe the effects that vapor from a broken potion will have on you if the potion was cursed. If this section is missing, the effects are the same as for the regular potion. Message: "This is the message the game will give you." Hallucinating: "You may also see different messages under certain conditions." (Reg) This describes the effect that the standard potion will have (i.e. non-cursed and non-blessed). (Reg) Increases a random stat by one if that stat is under maximum (i.e. as a potion of restore ability would). Message: None (Bls) Increases each stat by one if that stat is under maximum (i.e. as a potion of restore ability would). Message: None Hallucination (Reg) No effect. Message: "You have a vision for a moment." Healing (Reg) Exercises your strength, and if your hit points are less than maximum, adds one hit point. Message: None Invisibility (Reg) No effect. Message: "For an instant you could see through yourself!" Invisible or can See Invisible: No message Paralysis (Reg) Paralyzes you for 1-5 turns and abuses your dexterity. Message: "Something seems to be holding you." Restore ability (Cur) No effect. Message: "Ulch! That potion smells terrible!" (Reg) Increases a random stat by one if that stat is under maximum. Message: None (Bls) Increases each stat by one if that stat is under maximum. Message: None Sickness (Reg) If you are not a healer, the following effects occur: If your current hit points are less than five, your hit points will be reduced to 1. Otherwise, your hit points will be reduced by five. Also, your constitution is abused. Message: None Speed (Reg) Speeds you up for 1-5 turns and exercises your dexterity.
