This music composing activity helps the students develop their creativity and individuality. The students can learn the basic structure of music scores and can compose music easily using the computer.
First, the students used the computer for a CAI purpose. The teacher input new notes and rest marks into the software. The students learned the rhythms of each note and rest marks using the CAI. Next, the students composed rhythms for their poems. After listening to some sounds and melodies on the piano, they input melodies into the computer. Finally, they edited their music using the computer.
The students could make beautiful melodies using some music elements taught by the CAI. Since they enjoyed doing this activity, they could learn the basic structure of music easily.

When the students compose music, they can use the computer spontaneously. Therefore, the teacher needs to help the students only when the students have some problems.

We used PC-9801 computers and software called "MUSIUM Etude VER2." We also used a mouse, printer, MIDI, and speaker for the activity. Since the software was easy to use, the teacher did not need to be a computer specialist.

The students shared their knowledge for composing music with their peers. They helped each other when one of them had any problems.

We needed to reserve the computer lab for this activity. Each student could individually use a computer in the lab.
