The Explorer for Plant Name
J
J018
Résumé, summary
When the students observe plants, they use the magnifying glass and the microscope. After they sketch the plants, they look up some illustrated books to find out the right names of the plants. However, it is quite difficult and takes time for the students to find those names of the plants using the books.
The data-base software "Observing Plants" contains 700 items of plant data. Fourteen different conditions, such as the blooming season, color of flowers, and so on, become key words for the users to discover a plant name. Since the use of the data-base is quite easy, the teacher can show some basic examples in order to teach how to use the data-base.
The students can do their research work at their own pace using the data-base. They can learn the convenience of computer use for their research work.

Pédagogie, pedagogy :
Data-base activities help the students develop their research skills. When the students observe some plants, they carefully observe those plants with their naked eyes, with the magnifying glass and with a microscope. Then they sketch those plants and look up some illustrated books. However, it is difficult and takes time to find names of those plants using books. Therefore, the data-base activity help students to do the research activity easily.
Apprentissage, learning :
When the students observe some plants, they have individual different styles for the observation. They also have different previous knowledge. This data-base activity allows the students to do their research activity at their own pace.
Enseignement, teaching :
The teacher can show some basic examples in order to teach how to use the data-base. However, the teacher is one of the learners during the research activity. He/she can show the positive attitude toward the research activity and become a good model in the classroom.
Technique :
The data-base software "Observing Plants" contains 700 items of plant data. The data might be enough for the lower secondary school students when they deal with some plants in their area. There are fourteen different conditions, such as the blooming season, color of flowers, etc. which become key words for the students to discover out the name of a plant in the data-base.
Société, society :
Culture :
Institution :
We used the computer lab for the activity. The students could use not only the data-base software, but also some books for their activity. Therefore, the teacher prepared the books for the students.
Logistique :
The students need to have the basic technique for observing plants.
They need to be able to use the magnifying glass and the microscope appropriately.
Remarques, remarks :
The students learned the convenience of computer use for their research work. They developed a positive attitude toward science projects using the computer.
