A great deal of interest is being shown by many organisations across Europe, in the potential of using communication technologies or telematic systems to assist and enhance learning experiences within education and training. However, many organisations are in need of knowledge and know-how to help them make decisions as to what technology, teaching and learning styles are appropriate for their particular context. The aim of the JANUS User Association is to create a "community of interest" across Europe, in order to disseminate knowledge and know-how in using telematics for education and training. The Association has evolved from the JANUS Project which is one of a number of research and development projects funded by the European Commission DELTA Programme for telematics in education and training. A major spin-off of the JANUS Project is the body of expertise, knowledge and know-how which has been acquired. The project has also found from market research that there is a good deal of interest in utilising telematics systems amongst education and training organisations, but many need to have more information and assistance before they can make decisions. The JANUS User Association aims to cater for the needs of these organisations. The Purpose of the Association * to disseminate knowledge and know-how on the use of telematics amongst organisations in the education and training sector * to create a "community of interest" of organisations who wish to know more about using telematic systems in education and training * to assist members in developing a policy and implementation strategies towards the use of telematics within their organisation * to develop members' knowledge of the educational, regulatory and cost issues surrounding the use of telematic networks in education and training Founder Members European Association of Distance Teaching Universities Open University, Milton Keynes, UK Integrated Information Systems, Athens, Greece CET, Portugal Telecom, Aveiro, Portugal Lahti Research and Training Centre, Helsinki University, Finland Provisional Programme Monday 12 September 9:00 hrs Early Registration and Coffee 9:30 hrs Pre-Conference Workshop - "Using FirstClass - email and conferencing system" 10:45 hrs Registration and Coffee 11:10 hrs Introduction by Dr Paul Bacsich Chairman of the JANUS User Association Session One - Using Telematics - Different Perspectives 11:20 hrs Keynote speech - Institutional Perspective - speaker to be confirmed 12:00 hrs The Finnish Experience - Juha Nieminen, University of JyvŠskylŠ, Helsinki, Finland 12:50 hrs Lunch 14:15 hrs The impact of telematics on an institution computer network policy - Len Adam, Blackburn College, England Session Two - Learning from experiences of using telematics 15:00 hrs Tutoring via telematics - to be confirmed 15:25 hrs Telematics and the management of Change issues - speaker from Germany 16:00 hrs Coffee 16:15 hrs Workshop 1 17:00 hrs Workshop 2 17:45 hrs Workshop 3 18:35 hrs Depart of Bus to Hotels 20:00 hrs Pick up from Hotels 20:15 hrs Dinner in the foothills of the Ardennes 23:15 hrs Bus returns to hotels Tuesday 13 September 9:30 hrs The Development of the European Open University Network - Nicholas Fox, General Manager, EADTU 10:15 hrs Costing Telematics - Dr Paul Bacsich - JANUS Project Manager 11:00 hrs Coffee 11:30 hrs Workshop 4 12:15 hrs Workshop 5 13:15 hrs Buffet Lunch 14:30 hrs Workshop 6 Session Three - Futures 15:15 hrs The Potential of the European Market - speaker from Italy to be confirmed 15:50 hrs Coffee 16:15 hrs Futures - from a human resource perspective - Live Video Conference link up with Barry Arnett - IBM, Atlanta, USA 16:45 hrs Futures - from a technical perspective - Paul Bacsich, Open University, UK 17:15 hrs Summing up 17:30 hrs End of Conference 17:45 hrs Bus departs for hotel 19:15 hrs Pick up from hotel, depart for Maastricht 23:15 hrs Bus departs from Maastricht back to hotels.
