Open and Distance Learning Critical Success Factors

In many countries, open and distance learning methods have become an effective and equitable means of providing learning for people in all situations and of all ages. The main goal of the conference was to take stock of the current practice and developments of the fields, in order to provide decision makers with tools for action. The conference aimed to define the critical success factors for those wishing to expand their development of open and distance learning in a sustainable way.
The conference:
- has provided a forum for debate in the areas of policy-making such as research priorities, funding systems and performance indicators relating to the effectiveness of open and distance learning techniques.
- was an opportunity to hear contributions from practitioners in industy and education who have successfully demonstrated the viability of open and distance learning.
- has selected contributions from participants to illustrate the extent to which open and distance learning has penetrated higher education, continuing education, public administration, the private sector and research.
- has provided an occasion for participants to put forward suggestions for national, regional and international cooperative ventures.
This conference took place from the 10th to the 12th of October 1994 in Geneva and was organised by:
- the Department for Public Education of Geneva (CIP)
- the University of Geneva (TECFA),
- the Swiss confederation,
in close cooperation with:
- the European Union,
- the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OCDE),
and with the technical and editorial support of:
- the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP),
- the Observatory of Technology for Education in Europe (OTE).
