In open and distance learning, much emphasis has been given to the pedagogical concepts of student centred learning and student motivation, resulting in the design and delivery of high quality courses in higher education as well as more generally in resource based education. Recent developments in information technology and telecommunications call for a serious reconsideration of the actual meaning of these concepts, especially in light of increased demand for education and the opportunities for increased student motivation and cost effectiveness afforded by new technologies if integrated with educational design.
