From Robert "Apache" Howarth review in VoodooExtreme: "Baldur's Gate II: The Shadows of Amn is the sequel to Baldur's Gate, one of the hottest selling computer role playing games of all time. Based on the ancient Infinity game engine which powered the original, BioWare has implemented many key upgrades, including limited 3D support and overall - improving every facet of its dated technology. Starting off loosely where the first left off, Shadows of Amn continues the story of Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast and immerses the player into a rich new world, stocked with over a hundred new monsters, new character classes, spells, magic items and much, much more. To say Baldur's Gate II is a "big game" would be an understatement of medieval proportions. At minimum, blazing through the game playing like an umber hulk with a bunch of fighters and a couple clerics, one could perhaps win it in around sixty hours. (E.g. - BG2 done quick) Checking out a few of the side quests with a 'balanced' party, that number could jump to around a hundred hours. Actually enjoying the game, reading all the little books, talking to people and exploring the world, gamers are in for a good one hundred and fifty hours of Advanced Dungeons and Dragons goodness. Which actually -- could be enjoyed just as much playing the game again following a different path the second time around, so to speak.
Each chapter in Baldur's Gate II can be completed in different ways, as there are several different plot twists; routes players can travel to proceed on to new areas in the realm. While there are some major events a player cannot avoid, but in many cases you can play game true to your player's alignment. For instance good players may assume the role of a Harper, evil doers may become slavers, and neutral players can walk the fine line between good and evil, as balance governs the universe. These little plot twists and turns not only add flavor to the story, but a large level of replayability to the game. Ideally, Baldur's Gate II can be enjoyed on several different philosophic dimensions, depending on how you choose. Not everyone craves to walk the path of the righteous? Many paths are for the taking in the Shadows of Amn, and many different character classes and kits are available to walk down them. "
