The musical creation in the music learning : a computer tool as a framework for thecreation of tonal melodies
Since the early 1960s we see increasing the relevance of the role of creativity in music education (Swanwick 1979, Paynter  1970, Shaffer 1986). The research aims contribute in the endeavors to understanding how the creativity - or the creative thinking - can helps students to develop their aural skills. Although the creativity can have several meanings, in the view point  of this work creativity is a capacity to achieve a musical object and that object be recognized  like such by others members of a given cultural community. In this sense the present work defends the thesis that all creation to be achieved needs a framework. In order to provide a creation framework , we propose a computer tool to assist tonal melodies compositions. This device must help students to sequencing segments of tonal melodies with purpose to create an original melody. The algorithm underlying this device is based on the rules released from generative grammar of the tonal music (Lerdahl & Jackendoff 1983). The last stage of this work consist in observing  according Webster’s parameters (Webster, 1983) if the capacity to create melodies were affected after students have created with the device and the same for their aural skills on tonal melodies.

This thesis is still in its initial phase. At this point all that is certain is that will build upon the design-based research project done to fulfill the requirements for a MSc in Educational Technology with TECFA at the University of Geneva. C-SAW (Computer-Supported Argumentative Writer) isa prototype of a computer-supported authoring tool to help novices improve the structure and quality of their argumentation as well as the global structure and linearization of their texts. Further research will look at processes for learning and defining written argumentation models, the role of cognitive and metacognitive aids (verbal and visual) during writing processes and their effects on the quality of arguments and global structure and coherence of argumentative texts produced in individual and collaborative contexts.

PhD Thesis, Technology-induced paradigm change in biology 1975-2005 : Incidence in higher secondary schools .
This study aims to discover the major changes in biology over the last 30 years. Since molecular biology has matured and biotechnology has become reality, "in silico biology" has become an integral part of most if not all aspects of biology, and sequencing has made enormous masses of information available to biologists, the essence of work as a biologist has presumably changed, not only the tools, the techniques; so it appears worth discussing to which extent the espistemology itself has changed.
Thinking of biology also as an information science and life as a flux of information should help understand the gap between science and science teaching in higher secondary schools.
An assessment of how high schools integrate in silico biology and its analysis should allow to build a framework for integration into education. The goal is to help teachers implement better in silico biology.
Although it is too early to commit, this project could be built into a technopedagogical framework based on IMS-LD (Paquette 2002).

Medical alerts are a powerful means to support physicians in their daily work. For instance, alerts can warn about potential risks of over dosage or interactions when prescribing drugs. However, meta-studies have shown that physicians override at least half of the medical alerts. Low specificity and repetitive alerts lead to alert fatigue. Moreover, alerts seem to have usability issues as they are interrupting work flows and are not always efficient to handle. My thesis aims to research the interaction of physicians with Clinical Information Systems and their use of medical alerts. As theoretical basement, I build a framework for medical alerts which is based mostly on human-computer interaction grounds and theories of decision making. Additionally, I approach the medical alerts from an organizational and a system-centric point of view. In order to evaluate the framework, I develop a prototype which implements the theoretical findings. The prototype is then tested with physicians in a comparative study with a traditional alert system. The research is conducted at, and in collaboration with, the University Hospitals of Geneva.

Assessing the educational potential of video games through empirical research on their impact on cognitive and affective dimensions
On the basis of both the education and psychology literature on video games, the objective of this project is to/ propose a methodology to experimentally assess two hypotheses: First, playing video-games on a regular basis affects cognitive, perceptual and metacognitive abilities as well as emotional responses. Second, games can be categorized as a function of the specific abilities and dimensions they affect. The research plan is constituted of two phases. In the first phase, a meta-analysis of the literature will provide a set of dimensions that were found to be affected by playing video-games. The sensibility of these dimensions will be assessed within our population in an experimental study comparing video game players and non video game players. In the second phase, a categorization of video games as a function of the dimensions they are expected to affect will be elaborated and experimentally tested. Participants (secondary school students) will be asked to play one game on a regular basis for one month in order to investigate whether each category of game differentially affects specific cognitive and affective dimensions. my research blog (some other stuff too)- September 25, 2009

PhD Thesis, PROJECT-BASED E-LEARNING IN HIGHER EDUCATION: The model and the method, the practice and the portal
This study that we coin ePBL (for Project-Based e-Learning) is a developmental, intervention and partially action research in which we try to improve Project-Based Learning (hereafter PBL) in higher education, by decomposing this model to it’s components and features, and we propose a method for it’s successful application, which literature shows that is challenging. Our method leverages C3MS Internet technology, so is accompanied by a specifically configured portal in order to practice the proposed method. The goal is to help teachers implement better PBL (increase effectiveness, avoid pitfalls) in an affordable way but also to scaffold students to manage and successfully conclude their projects.
The online environment will provide support to the method by including the features and components that we will have defined. The whole system (method and environment) will evolve according to qualitative feedback gained from several case studies that we will conduct.

On-going projects

Interactive Storytelling aims to develop new media where the presentation and the evolution of a narrative can be influenced, in real-time, by the user. The IRIS (Integrating Research in Interactive Storytelling) project is a network of excellence grouping 9 European universities working together

ACTEUR

CLEAP

CLEAP is a FNS funded project (2003 - 2006) carried out in collaboration with CRAFT at EPFL. The originality of this project is to investigate learning from computer animation from two different perspectives, mental models and social cognition. In the first stage, this project will investigate three delivery features: the continuity of the information flow, the learner's control over the pace of animation and the permanence on the screen of previous stages of the animation. In the second stage, we will investigate whether the content of the animation should map the conceptual model or the events as they actually happen. Both the individual and collaborative setting will be used.

DUAL-T

In Switzerland, over 75% of higher secondary education is vocational. Most of it is organized as a “dual system”, in which apprentices spend 60 to 70% of their weekly training time as an employee in a company and the remaining time at school. Unfortunately, apprentices cannot always connect theory to practice, i.e. training and learning in school and the workplace is little articulated. Financed by the Federal Office for Professional Education and Technology, the Dual-T project aims at developing technology-enhanced learning designs that will help to narrow the gap between these different learning places. The effectiveness of learning technologies will depend on the extent to which they support pedagogical designs that target key cognitive skills (self-regulation, reflection and abstraction) in order to support professional knowledge acquisition. Concretely, we research on, build and implement different computer supported collaborative writing to learn activities fostering learning in vocational training.

LEARN-NETT

MICA

In the MICA project (Meta-Cognitive Incentive in Computer Assisted learning), we propose a method of confrontation aiming at supporting conscious awareness of regulation. It consists in confronting learners with the traces of another learner's activity (individually or with a peer-tutoring approach) in order to explicit the procedures they use to realize the learning task and to improve them.
Research on this topic is currently founded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (2005 -2006), in collaboration with Françoise Détienne (INRIA, Rocquencourt, FR), Ghislaine Chabert (Université de Savoie, FR) and Mathieu Quignard (LORIA, France). Further research project on this topic is in development in collaboration with Alain Mille (LIRIS, Université de Lyon, FR).

UTICEF
The project has consisted in elaborating a diploma in new technologies and educational sciences. From september 2001, about thirty students a year are enrolled in the postgraduate specialized diploma named UTICEF : Utilisation des Technologies de l'Information et de la Communication dans l'Enseignement et la Formation.
