FEDERAL PERSONNEL OFFICE

The Federal Personnel Office offers an extremely wide range of courses for civil servants working for the Swiss Confederation, but up to now does not use ICT-based learning technologies in this context.

The Federal Personnel Office are having a CD-ROM prepared for use in the training of apprentices working in Federal offices. Co-ordination, design and production are being carried out by Schweizerischer Electronik Unternehmen (SE) Bern, the one-time federal arms factory. The CD-ROM, currently in the design phase, will include information about the federal offices as well as basic civic knowledge (laws, parliament, federal court,..). The contents are initially designed to prepare apprentices for the Federal Apprenticeship Exam but it is hoped to subsequently market the CD-ROM for all interested citizens. The CD-ROM is designed as a stand-alone learning method. Each apprentice has to work through it on his or her own with the use of a PC/CD-ROM in the service he or she works for.

Easier to use and more motivating according to Mr. Grossrieder, it is hoped the CD-ROM will encourage apprentices to come back and work for the Confederation at a later date.
