HEWLETT PACKARD

Hewlett Packard employs some 500 people in Switzerland and has a number of regional learning centres (Bern, Zurich, Geneva) for employees. Individual plans for training are developed annually on the basis of an evaluation of the employees work over the past year.

Various learning technologies are employed including CBT and videoconferencing. According to Bruno Elmer, some 20% of in-house training is done via CBTs and this figure is expected to rise. CBTs include product demonstration, help with computer use and development of corporate culture. Videoconferencing for training - used once a month by customer support services and a couple of times a year by commercial staff - involves one-way video broadcasting from the States with added interactivity via the in-house computer network and over the telephone.

As with many other large companies, much support is provided via in-house network-based information sources similar to the World Wide Web and the use of e-mail - directly accessible from the various home pages - for questions.
