3.1 EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

3.1.1 Mastering the use of the technology itself

The goal of most of the companies in using learning technologies to teach the use of those same technologies is to attain a minimum level of competence in their use (Silicon Graphics, Oracle, Hewlett Packard, Digital). Such individualised objectives are explicitly mentioned in Digital's presentation of its Training Utilities.

3.1.2 Mastering specific job-related content

Where technology itself is not uppermost, the major goal of those using learning technologies - like most other forms of learning - concerns the acquisition of specific content. In the case of the MIGROS, for example, this involves knowledge about products and services (e.g. fruit, milk-products, furniture, electronic apparatus, customer service,..), about the company (structure and culture) and about important behavioural issues (attitude to customers, hygiene, team-work, ecology,.)

3.1.3 Encouraging an autonomous approach to learning

A number of companies aim to encourage learning autonomy on the part of their employees. This is particularly the case of on-the-job computer assisted learning (UBS, Oracle, Silicon Graphics, Digital,.).

3.1.4 Developing untapped knowledge

In the case of JITOL, one of the major objectives was not only to provide basic knowledge about a particular subject, but also to capitalise on informal knowledge development between participants via electronic interaction so as to add to that basic knowledge.
