Abstract
The success of collaborative learning depends from several factors that interfere with the task. Since there are so many variables influencing the process, it is very hard to tell in advance how successfully people will learn in collaboration.

Three approaches 1
Is learning together more efficient than alone?

- task performance
- self-regulation
- conceptual change
- confirmation bias

2
When is collaborative learning effective?

# Group composition

# Task features

# Media

3
How about the quality of interactions in collaborative learning?

Some hypotheses Mechanisms of collaborative learning
Conflict and disagreement Cognitive conflict (Piaget)
Socio-cognitive conflict (Doise & Mugny)

Person A forces person B to take over the other's point of view.

Self explanation effect Both ways of explanation support learning process: explaining to myself or to another person.
Internalization - social speech
- private speech
- inner speech
Shared cognitive load In collaboration the persons share the cognitive load by dividing it up into smaller portions. Each of them will be treated by one of the persons mainly.
Effect: less cognitive load for everybody.
Mutual regulation
Negotiation Co-construction: something we share together.
Representations Pairs build more abstract representations than individuals do.
