Why a new homepage?

The newly modelled homepage incorporates to a certain extend some aspects of ergonomics and design. Those are two fields which I am very interested in and where I see my major contribution among others in later professional life. Those are thrilling fields and I think of high demand on the market. And even if the demand is not so much sensed, one quickly encounters badly modelled web sites while browsing through the web. The internet becomes more and more important, and the information flood grows with it at the same time. Donald A. Norman is thus right in stating the "... paradox of technology". Hence, the awareness of the need for ergonomically presented information on web sites grows with it. The web pages taking into account ergonomics appropriately respond to the anticipation and demands of users. Those allow an instant overview on the quality and quantity of information presented, and enable intuitive and self-explaining navigation through the web sites. Design is a tool that supports ergonomics in guiding the user's eye.

Discussion

Hmmm... ok, one could have expected more after the first year at TECFA. Well, this exercise is certainly a work without risk since I did not dive much into the capacities of scripting languages. I accomplished it within few hours which were available to me. It consists of the html-script and a separate style-sheet. So, I want to mention briefly that I am capable to perform more complex scripting than this. Anyway, as this exercise provided freedom in the choice of one's preferred theme, I decided (or at least I tried) to broach design and ergonomics. Turning the time back to the first exercise for Staf 14, I do remember my somewhat ruleless deployment of possibilities in html scripting in conviction that more features provide a better and nicer work. Well, I know better now and incorporated some of my know-how in the new homepage. It is simple because it is the entrance page which is to tell the visitor with few words where she/he has run into ("homepage") and what to expect, namely personal stuff (one-liner by D.A. Norman, "student", "Curriculum Vitae", etc). The page should state a date that allow eventual verification of information actuality. A homepage is personal. I like to play with contradictions, with strict geometrics broken up or set in contradiction to playful forms. I like to do so as well with colors but they should be deployed carefully. A web page should not resemble a fruitsalat, nor any combination of colors is pleasant . A rather short overview but helpful advices give the Guide du choix des couleurs dans la création de pages écran.

I saw the colors deployed on my web page on a printed paper a priori and I truly liked the discreet combination of those ones. However, I need to admit that they differently appear on the screen. In terms of design aspects, one could have done more with a more sophisticated version than with PSP 5. I could well imagine to implement the most used links on the frontpage, just for my personal convenience. As it looks like from my point of satisfaction, I need to work it over again, but perhaps it is sufficient this time...
