Résumé, summary

The Magic of Learning Through Interner Way Headlines read "Ski the Internet," "Surf the Net", "The Great Information Highway," but at St. Andrew's Episcopal School (SAS) in Austin, Texas we say:"Dive into the Internet." The students dive for the coral reefs and come up surfing with the information needed for their projects. SAS has an Internauts Club for grades' first through eighth grade. The club has become a little red school house where age and grades do not matter. Students work together in a collaborative learning environment and are discovering how theWWW is changing the world of today. First grade students are very comfortable with the "Net" and so are able to log on and quickly begin diving the net. Hotlists, slip connections, Eudora, Telnet, Netscape to name a few terms are a part of their everyday vocabulary. Students involved in the club are able to apply their knowledge of the net to their school work. The WWW has tremendous impact on student's learning. In fact the the students in the club have become the Internet teachers in the computer application classes offered during the school day. The students begin learning HyperStudio in first grade. SAS has tied the "Net" into the development of their stack building. Here are a few examples of successful student projects: First graders develop a HyperStudio stack "All About ME!" The students in the club surf the "Net" and create their favorite Hotlists. These lists are included in their HyperStudio stac~ Second graders, develop HyperStudio stacks on a topic of their choice and find at least 3 web sites to add to their stack. Third through eighth graders are developing HyperStudio reports using the Internet as their main source of information. Two eighth grade students have designed and created the current SAS web page. The SAS Internet address is: http://sierra.onr.com/sainta/st.andrew.html. The reports range from music, space, stock markets, to building and amusement park using market findings. Students are researching topics they would normally have no interest in, but have now become a daily topic for discussion. There is even a race for the lab every day! Students are even begging for school not to closed during Spring Break! That is a first! What makes the "Net" so exciting for the students, after all, they are still having to look for resources for their information. It became a topic for discussion for the 8th grade computer class. Students stated the following about Internet: * Easy access * Fun to surf and find information * Made research more interesting * you get everything you would ever want * It isn't dull * The Internet helps you enhance your reports * It makes learning more fun * Students use state of the art, cutting edge technology. These responses have led me to believe the "Net" speaks to our students in their lingo. The "Net" is an informational educational tool which students respond towithenthusiasm. The key is: the ability to acquire sounds, images, and have the very best information at their finger tips. They can weed through the information quickly and begin the main project, their report. HyperStudio gives them the ability to make their work comprehensive, revealing their own personality, reflecting cooperative learning. Their work is more thorough and shows a better understanding of their topics. How successful is the WWW in students' projects? I would like to share one success with you. Two sixth grade boys have decide to come together and work on a space project. One student belongs to the club and is a loner and one does not belong to the club and is very outgoing. Both students are your typical ,wonderful boys. The student involved in the club only wants to surf games on the net. He is a boy who feels he works so hard in school that he just wants explore at his leisure. We all can relate to that! His partner, is an all around average student who works hard to stay up with his peers. He enjoys HyperStudio so he is in charge of designing the stack will the other surfs for the information. The students have been inseparable ever since the project began, along with discovering they work well together they are building a new friendship. The smiles on their faces as they enter the classroom are priceless. They are having to give and take and make their projects complete team work. They can not wait to begin and discover more information about NASA. They have discovered more to NASA besides flying to the Moon. These two students at the age of 11 are downloading, FTP, toggling between software, Telneting, Netscaping, etc., to have a well thought out multi-media report. The knowledge they are acquiring about all various locations of NASA in the U.S. is amazing. Most of all they have discovered the Magic of Learning the InternetWay. The Internet has given John a reason to study. He wants to do nothing but research his topic and transfer it to HyperStudio. These students will become Internet leaders for the school and pave the way for more enriched learning. This is our first year to have total access to the Internet. SAS has discovered the power of traveling the information highway and applying it to the curriculum. I have enjoyed teaching the students how to weed through the information overload, see the coral reefs and come up surf1ng the net. The magical world of knowledge has always been with me as a classroom teacher but, how exciting to have it surround us by the touch of a dial. The WWW helps educators to reach students of various learning styles. Students discover the enrichment of knowledgel They also are preparing for our changing world and they are developing an understanding of Global friendship and Communication.
