Résumé, summary

Alan has developed a hobby by becoming expert on the E-mail and his correspondence has extended beyond the sending of messages via mailboxes. He has a greater understanding of both the French language and the culture and he has inspired other younger pupils who read his messages and see him working. He has had access to working with computers and keyboards which his age group might not necessarily have had.

Pédagogie, pedagogy :

Having been involved in a Staffordshire schools project using E-mail in the classroom and using E-mail messages as reading stimulus in his lessons Alan Harvey, a Year 11 pupil from Cheadle High School, set about teaching himself to operate the school's Electronic Mail link.

Apprentissage, learning :

Alan spent every spare moment in the modern languages department learning how to create files, save files and print them off. He wrote messages to other local schools and exchanged information about topics he was studying as part of his G.C.S.E. course and latterly his A level French course.

Enseignement, teaching :

Alan began to write regularly to a club télématique in France. They began to exchange photos, personal letters, newspapers cuttings, recipes and even videos, all of which has helped Alan enormously in his studies of the French language. He and his French counterpart Marie-Laure discuss current affairs, riddles, the latest films and scandals which are going on. Alan collects the messages and these are used by his teachers as reading materials for lessons in other year groups. He sometimes finds himself studying the messages in his own A-level classes too...

Technique :

Alan is responsible for all the E-mail links for the school and sends messages to France requesting information on behalf of his teachers on events such as the Cantona affair, the French education system and the floods. He keeps himself up-to-date with current developments in the technical field and has shown visiting Students at Cheadle how to operate the E-mail and Tilitel pages.

Société, society :

Alan has beenin regular contact with Marie-Laure for 2 years now and has been invited to France to stay with her. She is coming to Cheadle on the French Exchange this month and is going to visit Alan, a prospect which he is quite nervous about!

Culture :

Alan has learnt a lot about events and life in France from the messages he receives and in particular a lot about the French interpretation and understanding of certain events in Britain which they are keen to discuss.
