Résumé, summary

Multimedia activities help students organize their thinking about a problem. The students can develop the multimedia screens using several different types of sources, such as VTR, graphics, newspaper articles, and so on. We decided using this tool for the Social Study subject for our 5th grade students. These students were learning about the industry in our country. The topic for the multimedia activity was "Japanese car export and the United States." In order to guide the students for this activity, the teacher made some models of the multimedia screens using different types of information. For example, the graphic about the number of cars which were exported to the United States and imported from the United States was made by the teacher. Several newspaper articles were also input by the teacher. The students gathered different kinds of information which were related to the topics. They developed the multimedia screen cooperatively. After making the multimedia screen, the students used the information to develop their opinion about the topic, they discussed about the topic, and they presented their opinion.

Even the teacher can learn about the problem from the multimedia screen which was made by students.

The teacher is a guide for the multimedia activity. The teacher may help students to find out the importance of the problem at the beginning. However, it is necessary for students to research and discuss about the problem spontaneously.

Technique :

The teacher needed to install the "Towns GEAR V1.1 L30 " for the computer "FM-TOWNS." This multimedia device is easy to use. Therefore, the teacher did not need to be a specialist for the activity.

Société, society :

Multimedia activities help students to do research on some topics cooperatively. The students input different types of information cooperatively, and they discuss about the topic together. This activity helps students develop their cooperative skills.

Culture :

The students learned the reason why American people were having problems in importing Japanese cars. The multimedia screen gave students opportunities to think about the other people's points of view about the topic.

Institution :

It was necessary to reserve the computer lab for the class. For the students' cooperative work, one computer was needed for each group of students.

Logistique :

It is preferable that the students learn the industry of their country in Social Studies.

The students realize the convenience of using computers while they are doing research on something.
