Analyzing Our Daily Food by Computer

Résumé, summary

We used the nutrient analysis software called "Healthy 2" for the students to analyze their daily food and to make appropriate meal plans. The students input the data of their most and least liked foods into the computer in order to analyze the nutrients of each food. The data was analyzed and displayed in graphic format on the computer screen. The students could quickly see the visual results. Therefore, they were more interested in studying about nutrients using the computer than doing the research with some books at the library. They could also create a wide variety of healthy meal plans with their creativity.

Pédagogie, pedagogy :

The students can think the importance of their daily foods using a great deal of information. The computer activity helps the students to gather and analyze the data of their daily foods and to obtain positive attitudes toward eating healthy foods every day.

Apprentissage, learning :

The students can input the data of their most and least liked foods, and make graphs for nutrients contained in these foods using the computer. Since the students can see the actual amount of nutrients visually, they could become more interested in their daily food.

Enseignement, teaching :

It is very difficult to teach the students how to make appropriate daily meal plans. The students are less interested in just studying about the amount of each food's nutrients than dealing with their own favorite food. The computer activity is very effective because each student can deal with his/her favorite food individually and quickly. The computer can be an effective tool for the teacher when he/she teaches nutrients and food.

Technique :

We used nutrient analysis software called "Healthy 2" on PC type computers. The users can input data using either the food name or the food number. After they input the data, the data is analyzed and displayed in some graph forms on the computer screen.

Société, society :

Culture :

Institution :

We used the computer lab for the activity. Two students made a group and use a computer. Each computer in the lab was connected; therefore, the teacher could give advice on each computer screen.

Logistique :

The students are better able to learn the use of the chart which contains the food number. The data of the food was more quickly available if the students use the food number instead of the food name.

Remarques, remarks :

The students became familiar with using computers. They also learned the convenience of computer use for analyzing some data.
