Résumé, summary

The students researched living things in their school district and created a data-base using the information. The software used for the activity was "findout," and "Z's STAFF KID98" was also used for including photographs and pictures in the data-base. First, the teacher taught some students basic skills necessary for creating a data-base. These students became leaders in each group, and taught other students the skills of programming. The students discussed the design for the data-base. Then each group of students programmed a part of the data-base. Finally, each part of the data-base, created by each group, was put together, and the data-base software was completed. The students learned the importance of nature and life during the activity. They also developed creativity, cooperative skills, and positive attitudes toward research activities.

Pédagogie, pedagogy :

Programming a data-base involve a great deal of work for the learner. The students develop their creativity and cooperative skills. They also develop a positive attitudes toward the use of information with computers.

Apprentissage, learning :

The students researched about living things in their school district and created a data-base using the information. They learned the importance of nature and life, and developed the skills and creativity necessary to do research studies.

Enseignement, teaching :

The teacher taught some students basic skills for creating a data-base. These students became leaders in each group and taught other students the skills of programming. The teacher encouraged the students to discuss how to design the data-base before programming.

Technique :

We used the software called "findout" for creating the data-base type software. We also used "Z's STAFF KID98" for including photographs and pictures in the data-base. These were easy to use; therefore, the teacher needed to teach only some basic skills to the student leaders.

Société, society :

The students made some groups and developed a data-base. They developed cooperative skills during the activity.

Culture :

Institution :

We used the computer lab for the activity. Since the students made 6 groups, at least 6 computers were needed. The teacher was readily available for the students' questions.

Remarques, remarks :

The data-base which was developed by the students was widely used by other students at the school.
