Résumé, summary

The students made this data-base software cooperatively. The topic which they researched was the history of their home town. First, the teacher prepared cards and some questionnaires for gathering information. The students gathered information from their parents and grand parents. Then they input the information in order to make a data-base. The students learned that the people's life style used to be quite different from the one which was current in their home town. They became very knowledgeable about their own culture through this activity.

Pédagogie, pedagogy :

The students can cooperatively research some topics in order to make a data-base program. This data-base activity helps the students to understand the convenience the computer as an information storage.

Apprentissage, learning :

Since the topic for the activity was the history of a local town where the students lived, they becameinvolved in the activity very enthusiastically. This sense of familiarity motivated their learning.

Enseignement, teaching :

The teacher designed cards for the data-base, and prepared some forms which were used for the students' research. He/she also helped the students to organize their information and encouraged the student to discuss the topic.

Technique :

We needed to install "My Almighty Mom," a data base software in NEC PC-9801. The teacher blocked out some complex functions which were too difficult to use for the 3rd graders. Therefore, the students were not confused while working on the computer. The students also input several pictures easily using the image scanner.

Société, society :

The students worked cooperatively in order to make the data-base software.

Culture :

The students learned many old stories of their home town. They realized that the people's life style had changed. They become very knowledgeable about their own culture through this data-base activity.

Institution :

It was necessary to reserve the computer lab for the students. The teacher was available for the students' questions.

Logistique :

The parents needed to agree to this activity because the students asked them to get some answers for questionnaires and interviewed them in order to get some information.

Remarques, remarks :

The students found that the computer could be used as an information storage. They also found the convenience of computer use during the activity.
