Résumé, summary

This "Kiteretsu Ecology Operations" had 4 types of activities. First, the students went on the field trip to make some pieces of paper from paper milk containers and to make some bars of soap from vegetable oils. Next, the students brought up several questions in order to live on the "Earth Spaceship." During the third activity, the students debated about paper diapers and ecological issues. Finally, the students used a computer simulation game called "Sim Earth," and learned about global ecological issues. The students are interested in their environment. They can learn some ecological issues during the field trip. However it is very difficult for them to obtain a perspective of ecological problems in the future. The computer game type activity motivates the students to learn about the ecological issues in the future. They can enjoy solving several ecological problems using the computer.

This activity helps the students to understand the importance of ecological issues. The students collected empty cans, discussed the recycling of garbage, and so on. They used the computer game and developed their future perspective of ecological issues.

However it is very difficult for them to obtain a perspective of ecological problems in the future. The computer game type activity motivates the students to learn about the ecological issues in the future. They can enjoy solving several ecological problems using the computer.

The teacher coordinates the activity not only using the computer but also using some real ecological problems which exist now.

Technique :

We used a computer simulation game called "Sim Earth" on PC type computers. This software can also be used for the Nintendo type computer. The students can spontaneously use the software;therefore, the teacher does not need to be a computer specialist.

Société, society :

The students develop a sense of global citizenship during the activity.

Culture :

The students learn about several natural resources in different countries during the game activity.

Institution :

It was necessary to reserve the computer lab for the computer activity part. The teacher was readily available for the students' questions.

This computer simulation game has two levels of difficulty. Therefore, the teacher can choose one of them depending on the students' understanding level.
