Investigation of Soil in Sapporo

Résumé, summary

The students made their own hypotheses about the history of their home land using their previous study. Then they went on the field trip in order to find rocks and fossils. Using a computer data-base, the students found out what these rocks and fossils were. After they wrote their findings and results, they discussed with their peers. For example, they found out the place where a volcano used to be located, found out which place used to be in the middle of the old river, and so on. For this activity, the teacher made a data-base for rocks and fossils of the home town. The students could use the data-base in their classroom freely. The students learned the techniques of basic research and discovered the convenience of computer use.

Pédagogie, pedagogy :

The students collected some rocks of their home town and found out the history of their land using the computer data-base. The teacher was no longer an instructor for this activity. The students and the teacher cooperatively worked for this research activity.

Apprentissage, learning :

The students can learn techniques of basic research. They collect rocks and fossils of their home town, and find out what these actually are with the computer data-base. Then they can consider their hypothesis about the history of their land.

Enseignement, teaching :

The teacher does not actually teach many things during this activity. Since the students do their own research cooperatively and receive some information from the data-base, the teacher is just a guide instead of an instructor for this activity.

Technique :

Since there was little information about soils and fossils of our town, the teacher created a data-base using software called "SCHOOL-CARD."

Société, society :

The students discussed about hypotheses and the result of their research. The discussion helped them develop their social skills.

Culture :

The students can be familiar with the history of their home town.

Institution :

We placed the computers in the classroom; therefore, the students could use them anytime for their research activity.

Logistique :

The students go on field trips in order to collect rocks and fossils. Therefore, the teacher needs to plan some field trips carefully in advance.

Remarques, remarks :

The students can learn the convenience of computer use for their research activity.
