Comments = The essence of my contribution would be a discussion of WWW at Honolulu Community College. I would like to focus on our efforts that have lead us in exploring the educational potentials of WWW. The highlights would be discussion of topics that include WWW as a campus information system front-end, WWW as a multimedia exploration tools, ie. Dinosaur Exhibits, Berlin Wall Freedom Monument, to www as interactive Internet and campus network training tools, to WWW as a vehicle for improving communication across all aspects of our campus. Comments = I am a technical author producing training materials on the use of computer graphics and scientific visualisation.
I am interested in W3 for distance learning. We already use it for static resource lists but I am also interested in developing CGI programs for automatic marking of multiple choice self paced tests using forms and inline images. This requires adding state to a stateless protocol.
There is also the question of whether it is better to use W3 as a delivery vehicle for such tests, transmitting a MIME typed file to be used with a supplied 'viewer' and the results sent back, perhaps with a POST ?

Comments = The WorldWide Web is an ideal system for the delivery of courseware for open and distance learning. But many educators are finding it difficult to create coherent hypertext documents with complex interconnection topologies and adequate navigation facilities. One way around this problem is the use of automatic conversion tools which allow courseware authors to work with familiar technology without sacrificing the flexibility of the new delivery medium.
My interest is in discussing experiences of different authoring models and what tools are available or are required in order to support them. I am responsible for a conversion tool (LaTeX2HTML) which has already been used in the production of courseware material (eg the CRS4 Active Books, lecture notes and assignments or similar material, training manuals). I participate in a large scale ``hypertextbook'' project (CSEP) involving many authors.

Comments = I did not have the time to elaborate a real contribution. So I will present this as a comment to Daniel Peraya's contribution, "Distance Education and the WWW". In my opinion the emergence of WWW will blur the distinction between "open flexible distance learning" and "normal use of WWW". The common problem will be the explosion of opportunities. I suggest, as part of the solution, to introduce the concept of "context" as a navigation tool. It is not a simple solution. For it to be usefull, it will have to have evolved to a critical size of allready defined contexts. Contexts could then be used to define what the user (or student) allready knows. This information could then be used to highlight the links most accessible to him. If he can define the context of what he wants to know, this would help to him to navigate a path of easyest access from what he knows to what he wants to know. I'm trying to find out what is needed to implement this concept of context.
