EDINEB Conference II Educational Innovation in Economics and Business Administration Examination for Quality? 17-19 August 1995 at The Department of Business Studies Uppsala University, Uppsala Sweden Call for papers and first announcement Second EDINEB conference: EXAMINATION FOR QUALITY? The crucial importance of the way students are examined for their work and performance is well known to all engaged in education. For many students the main guideline for how to study is not the formal curriculum but how they expect to be evaluated. Examples of old examination tests are often more in the focus for interest than the formulated purpose of the education. An investigator of examinations carried out at universities will find that to a large extent the examinations consist of written tests examining if the students have read the prescribed textbookand memorized the content at he time of the test. Sometimes the students do not even have to formulate their answers in their own words, because their memories are tested through multiple choice questions. The main intentions at this conference are to discuss questions related to how we should or should not examine students. Questions to discuss are: * Why do we really examine students? * Why not let the students examine themselves or each other? * Would there occur any learning without examination? * Could we turn examination into an event of learning? * What do we really measure in an examination? Ability to repeat or ability to use knowledge? * What is the relation between examination and long run memory? Presentations and discussions about innovative forms of examinations as well as research about the effects on learning in different forms of examinations are in the main focus of the conference. Other invited areas for education examples and research are: - Choice of curricula, contents and instructional methods. - Role of computers and information technology in education. - Educational organization, eg how to encourage and manage change processes. - Cognitive science perspectives on learning. - Problem-based learning. The state of the art. - Distance education and multimedia- education of the future? Although papers for the conference are invited in those areas, other topics connected to educational problems are also welcome. The organizing group will give priority to workshop sessions, where related topics can be discussed. A poster session will be organized for those wanting to present their work in this way. Although the members of the EDINEB-network are departments of economics and business subjects, other disciplines dealing with similar educational problems are also invited. This includes the professional groups from departments of pedagogy. EDINEB-NETWORK - A PRESENTATION. EDINEB (Educational Innovation in Economics and Business) is the name for a network that was founded at the First Edineb Conference, December 1993 in Maastricht, at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, University of Limburg, the Netherlands. This highly successful conference on Problem-based Learning in in Ecomics and Business, brought together teachers in economics and business, decision-makers, educational psychologists and other persons interested in educational innovation in economics and business. At this conference a network was founded to organize continued meetings for people interested in economics and business education, and to exchange ideas and experiences about educational innovation in this field. The general aim of the EDINEB-Network is to provide mutual support to member institutions who wish to adapt their curriculum to highly innovative programs. There are three primary goals: * strengthening of membership institutions in their realization of innovative programs. * strengthening of faculty capacities related to innovative education. * development of technologies, approaches (such as problem-based learning), methdologies and tools appropriate to to curricula emphasizing applied economics to domestic situations, or curricula especially designed for developing countries focusing on (local) societal needs, or curricula with an orientation to skills training. Strategies to achieve these goals can be summarized as follows: * Emphasis on institutional support and capacity building through exchanges, dissemination of information, improved communication and publications; * Emphasis on partnerships between universities; * Focus on research and development, in particular regarding questions of relevance to education in economics and business administration.
